Description

Origins:

The Avalkre War Horses were discovered in an enclosed valley north of the Aenohe homestead. Not much is known about where they came from. They are known to live up to 60 years, this is so a cavalry rider has one horse their entire career.

Appearance:

-Conformation-
Heavy draft in appearance, the Avalkre closely resembles a Percheron draft horse. They have thick necks in both genders and does not thin after gelding. They have a strongly arched Roman nose with expressive eyes and long ears. They have a silky beard that grows from just behind their chin. They have strong bones that can withstand the force exerted when they jump or charge. With strong hooves, they rarely have issues with foundering. They are also quite sure footed, rarely slipping on stones or ice.

-Base coat and Markings-
Avalkre are known to have almost any type of coat color, lighter coats are less common than darker ones. With limited white markings being preferred. The coat is a cross between a sheep's wool and a horse's hair, it doesn't grow very long but can  be sheared in hot weather. The Avalkre wool is used to make cold weather gear and clothes.

-Eyes-
Eyes can be any natural color.

Characteristic and behavior:

With their strong heart and lungs, Avalkre War Horses have amazing stamina and speed, more than is expected from a draft horse. The average Avalkre can go at a canter for hours in full armor and not become tired. With their strength, they can pull enormous amounts of weight making them very useful.

While social and friendly around most people, it is common to teach them from a young age to keep a level of caution around strangers. This is an old practice to keep them from being easily poisoned or injured. With their rider however, the Avalkre is as playful and as loyal as a dog, though they are mindful of their size. They are intelligent and are quick to learn new things allowing them to be taught multiple disciplines and tricks. Avalkre prefer to be kept in herds, and are very protective of those they see as their herd. With their size they are known to fight off mountain cats with ease. Stallions are often kept with mares, as they can be trained to ignore the scent of a mare in season.

Riders normally get an Avalkre as a foal, training them as they mature. The bond between Avalkre and rider is legendary in its strength, with horses willing to give their lives to protect their rider. Riders often have a secondary horse that is a foal of their main Avalkre, so if their Avalkre is killed in battle they have another horse to go to. Though the death of their Avalkre can cause many psychological issues for the rider since they have a very close bond.

In the wild they form close herds, mares help with other mares with their foals and will often adopt orphans into their herd. The herds are often led by one or two stallions, with the two stallions most likely being brothers or father and son. The stallions focus mainly on protecting the herd from outside dangers, though they can get quite territorial when strange stallions arrive. Young males often stay with the herd and as long as they can submit to the rule of the lead stallion(s) they can stay.

Discipline:

With their size many don’t think that the Avalkre can be used for much other than drafting competitions. On the contrary, their stamina and sure footedness allows them to participate in Dressage, Endurance, Haute Ecole, Vaulting, Tent Pegging, Reining, Horseball, Harness Disciplines, and many more. An Avalkre is only limited by its training. Since they are War Horses, stallions are trained to ignore the smell of mare when ‘working’ or if given a specific command. This prevented situations occurring with stallions becoming uncontrollable and breaking battle formation. It is a useful thing to teach to a stallion it is taught to every male Avalkre.

In a war setting, they are trained to fight off foot soldiers, hounds, and other horses. They have a more primitive version of dressage they are taught in order to move their rider safely through a battle field. They can easily be taught how to respond to subtle movements by the rider for direction.

Breeding:

When crossbreeding an Avalkre with a regular horse, the full neck mane is almost always inherited. The stamina and speed are inherited on levels that are determined by the non Avalkre parent. The intelligence is always passed down.

How to get one:
To get an Avalkre you must purchase one from the Aenohe homestead or acquire one from a breeding. There will be several auctions of Avalkre that have been attained, though if a buyer is looking for a specific type of Avalkre, one can be caught by the Castillo family and purchased by the buyer. There is a widget on my page for them.
